HOW DANGEROUS IS RADON?

Radon is the number one cause of lung cancer in non-smokers, and the second leading cause overall. Your risk of lung cancer increases with higher levels of radon, prolonged exposure, and whether or not you are a current smoker or former smoker.

Before signing a purchase agreement to sell residential property, the seller must disclose in writing to the buyer:

  1. Whether a radon test or tests have occurred on the property
  2. The most current records and reports pertaining to radon concentrations within the dwelling
  3. A description of any radon levels, mitigation, or remediation
  4. Information on the radon mitigation system, if a system was installed, and
  5. A radon warning statement

What is the “acceptable” level of radon for homes and businesses?
The US EPA has established the "action level" for deciding when you need to "do something" about the radon in your home, school, or work place as 4 pCi/l. With that being said, lower levels of radon are often still mitigated. You can decide what levels of radon you are comfortable living with in your home. Radon testing allows you to get an accurate reading of your home

What is the difference between do-it-yourself radon kits and hiring a radon professional?
The common do-it-yourself charcoal tests are often not accurate, and take up to90 days to accumulate radon numbers. The test is then sent to a lab, where it is processed and an average number is calculated. The problem with these devices is the contamination of the time that the test is removed from your home to the time the lab receives the test, so the numbers can often be skewed significantly. Will I have any symptoms from radon exposure in my home?

There are no joint pains, headaches, rashes, etc., that will occur with radon exposure. Radon exposure is similar to lung cancer, and some of these symptoms include:

Coughing: This includes a persistent cough that doesn't go away or changes to a chronic "smoker's cough,” such as more coughing or pain.

Coughing up blood: Coughing up blood or rust-colored spit or phlegm

Breathing difficulties: Shortness of breath, wheezing or noisy breathing

Loss of appetite: changes in appetite, which may lead to unintended weight loss.

Fatigue: It is common to feel weak or excessively tired.

Recurring infections: Recurring infections, like bronchitis or pneumonia

They came out a couple of years ago and did radon mitigation. We are selling our house now and the required test came back higher than 4. Even though it was a little beyond the 2 year warranty, Cory came out and installed a larger fan and the readings are now less than 4!
